Harubi / Carob
The Carob (Ceratonia siliqua) is a Mediterranean tree that has a fascinating history spanning over four thousand years. The beans were used to weigh gold, which is where the term carat came from, Keration being the ancient Greek name for Carob. Carob is often substituted for chocolate and cocoa as it contains less fat, protein, energy and stimulant such as caffeine. While many people like eating the fresh pods which are leathery and sweet, the main commercial product is the syrup that is used in the manufacture of biscuits, chocolate and other confectionary. Medicinal products such as cough linctus are made from the bark and roots.
This handsome evergreen tree can grow to 12m high or be clipped to form multi-stemmed shrub for small gardens, hedges, or trained as an espalier to cover a garden fence. It has a dense canopy of attractive glossy green foliage and bronze new growth.
